PONTE VECCHIO

It is said that the Ponte Vecchio existed in Roman times as a passageway along the Via Cassia. 

After being destroyed and rebuilt a number of times, Ponte Vecchio as we know it today was reconstructed on three arches in 1345, probably by Neri di Fioravante. 

The tiny shops of gold merchants ( in the middle ages there were fishmongers, butchers and leather shops ) and the small houses on the sides of the bridge are its most characteristic features.

PALAZZO PITTI

Palazzo Pitti was built in 1458 by one of the richest and most powerful families of the era, the Pittis – business rivals of the Medici family.

The appointment was given to Brunelleschi who built only what today corresponds to the central part of the Palace.

It currently houses the Galleria Palatina ( housing works by Raffaello, Giorgione, Tiziano and Rubens ), The Gallery of Modern Art, the Museo degli Argenti and the Museo delle Carrozze.

The famous Boboli Garden is reached through the main entrance of the Palazzo Pitti.

BOBOLI GARDEN

A typical italian – style garden of 16th century which was designed in 1549 by Niccolo Tribolo; it is laid out on terraces behind the Palazzo Pitti, on the Boboli hill, with fountains, groves, paths, caves and an amphitheatre. 

The most notable fountains in the garden are: the ” Fountain of the Artichoke “, by Francesco Susini and Francesco del Tadda ( 1641 ); the ” Fountain of the small Bacchus “, by Valerio Cioli, placed near the cave of Buontalenti; the ” Fountain of the Pitchfork ” by Stoldo Lorenzi and the Fountain of the Ocean by Giambologna ( 1576 ) in the Piazzale dell’ Isolotto.

PALAZZO UFFIZI & UFFIZI GALLERY

Palazzo Uffizi contains the prestigious Uffizi Art Gallery. The building, a wonderful architectonic work of Vasari, was begun in 1560 by Vasari and terminated in 1580 by Buontalenti.

The Gallery houses some of Florence’s, Italy’s and world’s most important works of art.

THE CATHEDRAL – S.MARIA DEL FIORE

Florence Duomo

Cathedral was begun in 1296 by Arnolfo di Cambio on behalf of the republic.
When Arnolfo died in 1303 the works were continued by Giotto until his death in 1337.

After that the construction was interrupted and started again by Talenti and Brunelleschi.
In fact only in 1436 Pope Eugene the fourth consecrated the Cathedral with a solemn ceremony dedicated to S. Maria del Fiore.

PIAZZA DELLA SIGNORIA

The Palazzo Vecchio, even known as Palazzo of Signoria, was begun in 1299, designed by Arnolfo di Cambio and completed in 1314. The gothic – style construction was designed to serve as a fortress, to protect the Signoria from popular demonstrations and revolts.

The elegant, slender and battlemented Tower, called Tower of Arnolfo, is 94 meters high. The greatest historical and political events of the city, took place in the square in front of Palazzo Vecchio.

THE DAVID – MICHELANGELO

Work of Michelangelo Buonarroti ( 1504 ) formed from a huge block of marble sculpted originally by the senese Agostino di Duccio to make the Giant. Once the David was completed Michelangelo placed it in Piazza della Signoria ( Florence ).

In 1873, after showing signs of deterioration, the statue was moved into the Galleria dell’ Academia and replaced in the square with a copy.

SANTA MARIA NOVELLA

SANTA MARIA NOVELLA – first great basilica in Florence

Santa Maria Novella was begun by the Architect Friars Sisto and Ristoro in 1246 and finished by Jacopo Talenti in 1360. The interior, of Gothic – Roman style, is divided into a nave and two aisles.

The Campanile dates back to the 14th century. A visit of the magnificent thirteenth – century cloisters, on the left of the church, is highly recommended.

The whole length of the ground floor level is constructed with massive diamond – pointed rustication. Work was begun on the palace in the second half of the 17th century by order of the Ambassador to Vienna, Count Czernin of Chudenice. It was completed towards the end of the century under the supervision of the diplomat’ s son, Hermann Czernin.

The many eminent Italian artists who took part in the construction of the palace made some outstanding contributions, among whom was F. Caratti.

In the first half of the 18th century the adjoining garden was added, as was the magnificent stairway with its ceiling fresco by V.V. Reiner ( Fall of the Titans ). During the same period, F.M. Kanka made some adjustments to the building. Towards the middle of the 18th century renovation work was needed, following the French occupation, and this was carried out by A. Lurago who added three doorways and rebuilt the garden Orangery in Rococo style. Around this time I.F. Platzer produced several sculptures which now decorate the palace halls.

The Czernin Palace  is the largest of the baroque palaces of Prague, which has served as the offices of the Czechoslovak and later Czech foreign ministry since the 1930s. It was commissioned by the diplomat Humprecht Jan Černín z Chudenic, the Habsburg imperial ambassador to Venice and Rome, in the 1660s.

It stands on a limestone hill 425 feet high where, according to the legend, St Denis, the first bishop of Paris, was beheaded in about 250 A.D., along with the priests Eleutherius and Rusticus.
     Because of its strategic position, dominating the whole of Paris, Montmartre has also had an important part in the city’s political history. In fact the Commune began from an incident here in March 1871. Then throughout the 19th century Montmartre was the mecca of all the Bohemian artists and for a long time it maintained its place as the literary and  artistic centre of the whole city.

MONTMARTRE CEMETERY – The entrance is in Avenue Rachel. Opened in 1795, it contains the tombs of many famous figures: painters like Fragonard, Degas and Chasseriau; writers such as Theophile Gautier, Edmond and Jules de Goncourt, Stendhal, Emile Zola, Alexandre Dumas the Younger and Heinrich Heine, and the composers Hector Berlioz and Offenbach. There are also the tombs of the playwrights Labiche and Giraudoux, the actors Sacha Guitry and Louis Jouvet, the celebrated Russian ballet dancer Nijinsky, and the famous Alphonsine Plessis, better known as the “Lady of the Camelias”.

PLACE BLANCHE – Lying at the toot of the Montmartre hill, it owes its name, meaning “White Square”, to the chalk roads which once existed here. It is overlooked by the long sails of the Moulin Rouge, the music hall founded in 1889; among the artists who performed on its stage were Jane Avril, Valentin le Desosse and La Goulue, and here the can-can was born, immortalised in the canvases of Toulouse-Lautrec.
     From here, by way of Boulevard de Clichy, lined by many modern cinemas and beer halls, one reaches Place Pigalle, a bustling scene, particularly at night, when its night clubs turn on their many lights. Boulevard de Rochechouart, which begins here, is also filled with places of entertainment, including the dance hall, the Boule-Noire, at no. 120, and Taverne Bavaroise in front of it. At. no. 84 was the famous Chat-Noir cabaret, recalled so often in the songs of Aristide Bruant, founded in 1881.

ST-JEAN-DE-MONTMARTRE – Near Square Jehan-Rictus, it was completed in 1904 by de Baudot, and is interesting as the first church in Paris built with reinforced concrete. It is known to the people of the area as St-Jean-des-Briques  (St John of the  Bricks)  because of its brick exterior.

THE BATEAU-LAVOIR – Continuing by way of Rue Ravignan, we reach a small square, Place Emile-Goudeau. This was the site of the Bateau-Lavoir, a small wooden building unfortunately destroyed by a fire in 1970, where modern painting and poetry were born in about 1900. In it Picasso, Braque and Gris worked (Picasso painted the Demoiselles d’Avignon, which marked the birth of Cubism, here), and while they were revolutionising the traditional canons of painting, Max Jacob and Apollinaire were doing the same for poetry.

RUE LEPIC – It begins in Place Blanche and winds up towards the top of the hill. In autumn there is a veteran car rally which follows the street’s steep curves. At no. 54 Vincent Van Gogh lived with his brother Theo. Nearby is the celebrated Moulin de la Galette, the last remaining windmill dating back to the 17th century and a former dance hall, which inspired paintings by Renoir and Van Gogh.
